Afro Carpentieri
Born in Lecce, South italy, in 1983.
He graduated from Milan Polytechnic in "Architecture and Society" in 2008; He participates and holds various university workshops as a lecturer subject, working on urban studies in Middle Eastern cases in Turkey and in Egypt.
In 2010 he opened his professional atelier in Lecce and works in the public and private sectors, designing and realising architectural works with the experimentation of craft techniques and natural materials. At the same time, he co-founded the Ass. Cult. JANUB (www.janub.org), a platform for research and laboratory experimentation that develops socio-cultural activities through a multidisciplinary, systemic and experiential approach.
He also worked for a period on the urban planning of the city of Lecce as a consultant with Genoa's university of architecture.
In 2017 he became Vice-President of the Botanical Garden of Salento, a public-partnership foundation in which he represents the Municipality of Lecce, carrying out a community and social-botanical experimentation project; in 2018 with this project he was selected in a European cultural programme called "Actor of Urban Change".
In 2019, he started a personal art project in permaculture and agroecology that gave birth to the A.N.N.A. farm in the rural area of the municipality of Lecce.he vision of the intervention is to protect the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Forest and implement it with wild edible species to graft. To create spaces and devices of rural architecture functional to cultural and regenerative activities based on the capture of rainwater, water storage that increase the fertility of the soil in response to the environmental processes of desertification.
Today he has various projects under development for private and third sector clients for both residential, hospitality and cultural in architecture and landscape design using an ecological approach.
In the past year, he has been involved in the creation of an Italian collective of architects, engineers, and designer named Naho (www.naho.it), whose aim is to use natural materials in contemporary constructions. The collective supports self-building as a form of autonomy and shared knowledge, and they see the construction site as a laboratory for experimentation, sharing and ecological awareness.
